Leading with Kindness: Middle School Ambassadors Build Community at All Saints’

Leading with Kindness: Middle School Ambassadors Build Community at All Saints’
Dr. Emma Whitman, Head of School

Recently, I sat down with a few of our New Student Ambassadors, and I’m excited to share more about this new program!

This year, in middle school, we introduced the New Student Ambassador Program—a leadership opportunity for sixth- and seventh-grade students to help create a welcoming and supportive environment for new middle school students. These friendly students answer questions, check in with new students during WIN time, and offer encouragement so new middle school students can confidently navigate their first year.

If you notice a student with a green strap on their iPad bag moving around campus, that’s one of our Ambassadors. They’re here to answer questions, offer guidance, and help new students feel at home.

Read below for a snapshot of our discussion, what the program means to these students, and why they’re excited to be part of it.

Q: What is the Student Ambassador program?

  • The program was created to support new middle school students and make sure they always have someone to turn to for help. Whether it’s finding a classroom, understanding homework, or figuring out where to go or what to do for a special event, Ambassadors are there to guide them. We also make sure no one feels left out—if someone needs a friend at recess or lunch, we’re happy to step in and spend time with them.

Q: Why do you think the Student Ambassador Program is important?

  • Some new students might not know what to do, and it can feel scary to ask for help. Having Ambassadors gives them someone they can easily go to with questions or concerns. It is really fun to be an Ambassador.

Q: What are you most excited about?

  • I’m excited for the chance to serve the All Saints’ community and help new students learn how to be successful during their time here. I also just love helping and meeting new people—making friends, introducing others, and connecting people is really fun.

Q: How do you want new students to feel at All Saints’?

  • We want new students to feel like they belong and that they are appreciated—because everyone is loved at All Saints’. We also want to make sure they feel comfortable with their schedule, classes, and homework, so nothing feels overwhelming. And, of course, we’re here to explain expectations and answer questions along the way. We want students to know we are here to help!

Q: Does the Student Ambassador team have any exciting plans for the future?

  • Yes! We’re planning a lunch meet-up with all the Ambassadors and new students. We’ll play games, get to know each other better, and talk more about what we do. We have a lot of big ideas.

Q: What should a lower school student do if they want to become a Student Ambassador in middle school?

  • They should talk to us and ask questions! Then, once they’re in sixth grade, they should fill out the application form and really put their best effort into it, since Ambassadors are selected. The most important qualities of an Ambassador are being willing to help, being kind and patient, listening well, and enjoying working with others.
