Service to Others

Service to Others
Dr. Emma Whitman, Head of School

At All Saints’ our mission is our greatest strength: it defines who we are, what we do, and where we are going. Although we’ve grown and evolved throughout the years, our mission has always remained at the center.

Every word of our mission provides profound direction for our community, including the closing line, “to serve a world in need.” We want our graduates to have a well-developed desire to take action to help others and make the world a better place.

However, it is important to reflect on what service truly means at All Saints’. It’s more than the act of gifting—it’s about giving of yourself and understanding. Service learning is about exploring, perspective-taking, and understanding. Service learning is about engagement.

The engagement of service learning is seen within all parts of our community, every day. Our parents volunteer their time every week to help our community: from admissions ambassadors, to serving kids at Pizza Thursday, to leading our school-wide events. In lower school, older students have opportunities to serve as Reading Buddies for younger students.

In middle school, Builders Club has over 40 members in sixth through eighth grade who work to develop leadership skills through service to the school and broader community, including organizing our annual food drive. We are excited to report that this year, we collected over 50 boxes filled with food and raised over $4,000 for St. Mary’s Food Bank. Earlier this year, the Student Council donated $8,000 to the Episcopal Hurricane Relief Fund to immediately support those impacted by Hurricanes this fall.

We also take service off of the All Saints’ campus. This year, Ms. Nicole Tamer, Kindergarten Teacher and Service Learning Coordinator, worked with every grade level to select a service learning partnership in the broader community where the All Saints’ students could make a difference. Current partnerships include Phoenix Children’s Hospital, St. Vincent de Paul, Phoenix Beautiful, Arizona Wildlife Conservation, Laws for Paws, Feed My Starving Children, Phoenix Rescue Mission, and Honor Flight. These yearlong partnerships are focused on teaching our students about the world around them, and how we give back with time, attention, and helping others.

Seeing our alumni pursue their passion for making a difference in the world is one of the most exciting parts of seeing our mission in action. One high school junior is the co-chair of Keno Teens at Brophy. For the past two years, he has repurposed our retired technology to equip tutoring programs at shelters for children in Phoenix and Mexico. Another student founded the RosFranklin Society, which seeks to inspire and educate fourth- and fifth-grade girls about STEM. The group met five times at All Saints’ this fall.

At All Saints’, service is an integral part of the mission that drives our work. We can “serve a world in need” in profound ways by developing students’ greater sense of purpose. Through our community, we can teach and demonstrate that service isn’t just about giving back—it’s about truly making a difference in the world.
