Public and Private Middle School Comparison

Finding the right middle school for your child can be a difficult experience. There are so many questions you might not even realize you have until you start comparing your different options. Which school district is right for your middle schooler? Why do some schools have higher rankings than others? Should you explore public or private schools?

This last question can really put a wrench in many parents’ wheels. Is there really such a difference between public and private school educations? Let’s take a look.


It’s not uncommon for public schools to be underfunded. Since they’re financed through federal, state, and local taxes, changes in the economy or unforeseen political games can severely alter the amount of funding public schools receive.

Private schools, on the other hands, are funded through their students’ tuitions. This ensures no ebbs and flows in terms of income. Because private schools must generate their own funding, which may also come from private grants, fundraising from parents, alumni, and other community members, the dependence on public funds doesn’t exist.

Private schools enjoy an independence that public schools simply do not. They don’t receive tax revenues, so they’re exempt from the type of red tape and bureaucracy that can hinder educational practices in public schools. This means many private schools are able to be highly specialized and can offer their students advanced curricula and differentiated learning courses that simply aren’t possible in most public schools.


Public schools are required to accept any child who applies to attend (sometimes within certain geographical limits). Private schools, however, can be (and are) selective about who attends their schools, often resulting in student bodies filled with bright pupils who not only challenge themselves, but also those around them in a healthy, productive way.


Nearly all teachers in public schools are state-certified. Both public and private school teachers often have subject-area expertise and an undergraduate or graduate degree in the subjects they teach. According to, “A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Education is needed for all public school teaching positions today and Mathematics and Language Arts concentrations are commonly most appealing. Teaching jobs are usually assigned by area of specialty.”

Private school teachers benefit from small class sizes, allowing them to teach effectively as well as give students the individual attention they deserve. This results in students accomplishing their educational goals.

At All Saints, middle school teachers are responsible for teaching a rigorous curriculum that includes accelerated language arts and math programs, technology integration, lab sciences, Spanish, and speech as well as an elective program for students in seventh and eighth grades. Students continue to enjoy opportunities to explore the arts and are increasingly challenged to give back by engaging in community outreach and service learning.


Public schools must follow requirements set forth by their respective states that set out particular standards and assessment methods. Private schools can choose any program and assessment models they wish. This liberty to design their own curriculum or avoid testing via standardized applications can result in higher standards for students.

Class Sizes

In public schools, after third grade, class sizes tend to get bigger and bigger, especially in large school districts and urban schools. Many private schools provide small classes with low student-to-teacher ratios throughout students’ educational careers, ensuring they continue to get personalized attention and teachers who truly know how to teach each individual child.
